LAC LA BICHE - The Lac La Biche Royal Canadian Legion McGrane Branch 28 has started its annual Poppy Campaign. Poppy donation boxes ‘popped’ up at front counters of community businesses and high-traffic buildings Friday morning. The campaign kick-off commemorates the November 11 Remembrance Day event.
The annual poppy event’s proceeds play a significant role in the Legion’s ability to support veterans and their families throughout the year, says Lac La Biche Legion President Danny Stevens.
“Every dollar raised by the poppy fund goes to helping veterans in one way or another.”
Poppies represent how much veterans have sacrificed for Canada, says Stevens, and with the support from the community, more services can be bolstered.
No cadet poppy sales
With COVID-19 regulations for the second year in a row, the Lac La Biche Army Cadets won’t be selling poppies in the community, says Stevens, encouraging members of the public to seek out the red remembrance pins in local businesses.
“The cadets cannot be out on the street selling poppies. We will have to rely on the people who go into the merchants and make their donations this year,” he said.
The 2021 Poppy Campaign marks its 100-year anniversary in Canada making the event that much more historical.
Poppies will be available until Remembrance Day on November 11.
Remembrance Day services in Lac La Biche will again be held outdoors at the McGrane Branch Cenotaph.
