The Grant MacEwan Griffins snatched the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference men's hockey championship for the third time in a row as they defeated the NAIT Ooks
In the best-of-three final series, the Griffins came out on top as they handed two back-to-back defeats to NAIT with the March 22 game ending 5-2 and March 23 game ending 5-4 — ultimately crowning Grant MacEwan in a three-peat championship win.
With Friday's game a straight forward win, Saturday's game was not — with the Griffins down 4-0 at one point in the game, but fighting back to take the game into overtime ... and then double overtime ... at the Grant MacEwan University Arena.
Griffins' veteran forward Ryan Baskerville notched the game-winner.
The Portage College Voyageurs played the Griffins four times in regulation league play this season. The Voyageurs gave the Griffins one of just seven of the Edmonton team's losses on the season with a 4-3 decision last October. That win was just one of five on the Voyageurs stat sheet for the season. The Voyageurs did not make the playoff round in the ACAC this season, finishing their year a month ago on March 2 with a 5-22-1 record that kept them in the final spot of the eight team league.
