Living in rural northern Alberta can feel downright isolating at times, especially during the long winters.
While we don’t always notice it, there is a considerable amount to do throughout the year - especially during the winters - in our home communities across the Lakeland region, and this includes taking in local sports action.
As the reporter in Lac La Biche, I attend many of the local hockey, soccer, baseball and futsal games, along with a variety of other sports in the community. Over this past winter, I especially enjoyed covering the Portage College Voyageurs and the Lac La Biche Lakers hockey team.
Now that winter is giving way to spring, and the outdoor baseball and soccer seasons will soon be upon us, there is nothing more entertaining than getting out and watching a minor ball game.
Given how hard these young athletes work and how dedicated they are to their respective sports, we should celebrate and support our local sports teams.
Showing our support, either as fans or by volunteering and donating, helps keep these teams going, and provides encouragement to the young athletes and the officials who quite often lend their time and talents on the pitch, at the ball diamond or at the local hockey rink.
‘Support local’ is a popular saying these days, and while this applies to shopping local, it should also apply to community sports clubs.
