After months of unending cold temperatures, brutal amounts of snow, and short days followed by long, dark evenings and nights, that season Canadians embrace with open arms is finally upon us.
Despite a few late snowfalls to put some moisture into the ground and green up the landscape, spring is finally here.
As the name implies for many people, spring is a time for emerging into warmth, a time of renewed energy and growth, along with brighter days. When the days become longer and warmer, we are anxious to get out of our hibernation and explore and enjoy things, hence the term ‘spring fever.’
Seasonal farmers’ markets and other venues preparing to open their doors is also a sure sign of spring. In Alberta, along with warmer and longer days come the emergence of early blooming flowers such as daffodils, the return of birds singing, and the budding of trees.
Since I was very young, I have always viewed spring as a time of the year characterized not only by warmness, but new beginnings. It is during the spring months that I would break out my bicycle and play baseball and other sports with friends.
Even as I reach my late 40s, I find nothing more invigorating than getting out and going for a walk in the warm winds of spring.
While summer is a great time for doing those outdoor activities we all love, spring is a season that truly should be cherished. It is a special time when we changeover from our long, cold winters to much warmer months.
