TWO HILLS - Thirteen confirmed cases of the measles are being reported by Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Two Hills.

"This includes seven new cases confirmed since April 4. An additional new case has been confirmed in the Vegreville area making for 21 confirmed cases within the Central Zone at this time," reads a notice sent out by AHS on April 8.

The general public is being notified that "At least four of the individual cases have also been in public settings while infectious," and released a list of locations where the individuals were. AHS says more locations may be released later.

People with symptoms are advised to stay home, "and call Health Link at 811 before visiting any healthcare facility or provider, including a family physician clinic or pharmacy."

AHS says the measles vaccine "is highly effective at preventing infection and complications." The vaccines are offered free of charge in Alberta.

"Anyone who attended these locations at these times, who was born in or after 1970 and has less than two documented doses of measles-containing vaccine, is at risk for developing measles. They should self-monitor themselves of symptoms of measles and are strongly encouraged to review their immunization records," according to AHS.

Measles is spread easily through the air and symptoms may include a fever, cough, runny nose and/or red eyes, and a rash that appears three to even days after the fever starts.

"The rash appears red and blotchy on lighter skin colours. On darker skin colours, it can appear purple or darker than the skin around it, or it might be hard to see," reads the information from AHS.

"Complications of measles can include ear infections, pneumonia, inflammation of the brain, premature delivery, and rarely death. Persons who are pregnant, less than one year of age, or have weakened immune systems are at greatest risk," says AHS.
