St. Paul FCSS offers Halloween cheer

ST. PAUL – As the sun dipped below the horizon in St. Paul on Oct. 31, members of the community dressed up as creatures and characters, setting out armed with buckets and bags on a journey to fill up with treats.

Many of them also headed out to the St. Paul Recreation Centre. At the entrance of the building, St. Paul Regional FCSS staff members organized the annual drive-thru trick-or-treat from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A steady stream of cars made their way through the drive-thru, as FCSS staff and St. Paul Youth Council volunteers distributed treats to each carload of people.

Lynn Smid, director of FCSS, said 600 bags filled with treats were put together with donations from the community.

“It’s always a little nerve-wracking,” hoping there are enough treats for everybody, said Smid, but being able to give out all 600 bags is amazing. “We get what we get,” from the community, “[and] we give what we can.”

She said all treats were donated by members of the community and local businesses, thanking them for helping “show a little cheer during Halloween.”

Smid also thanked Racette Jr. High School for helping wrap and package the treats.

In addition to the treats, Orbis Sports from Beaumont brought in laser tag for the evening at the Recreation Centre. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., participating youth were armed with laser rifles, immersing themselves in an arena of lights.
