Danger lurked in the skies over the Lakeland on Thursday, with funnel clouds spotted over Bonnyville and in the Iron River area.

A narrow funnel cloud loomed over the west end of Bonnyville Thursday afternoon. The cloud was visible for several minutes moving north when it collided with a large cloud from the west and disappeared without touching down.

Shaun Vachon of Northern Truck and Industrial Supplies Ltd., Bonnyville's NAPA dealer, photographed the cloud on his camera phone, as did many other area residents.

Vachon, co-worker Brent Mattice and other staff members and customers kept watch, with Mattice thinking they might need to head to the basement of the building at some point.

"We were just mesmerized," Mattice said, adding that the wispy white tail of the cloud appeared to be within 50 feet of the ground.

"It was really just a white funnel coming out of a black cloud,” he said.
