ARDMORE – The Lakeland Scruffy Puppy 4-H club held its 2025 communications event, where participants sharpened their public speaking skills in front of a panel of judges. The event was held at Ardmore School on Feb. 18.
Participants got to pick a topic of their choice to present, and had the option of doing a presentation complete with visual aids such as a PowerPoint or live displays. They could also deliver a speech and participate in an ‘impromptu’ speech where they were surprised with a list of discussion topics, then given a minute to choose one and collect their thoughts before presenting their argument in front of the crowd.
Club Leader Melanie Miko expressed how proud she was of all the kids, and the joy it brought her to watch them improve and gain confidence. Miko said she had kids that wouldn't tell her their name at the beginning of the year, nevermind getting in front of a crowd and talking for five minutes.
“I’m so crazy proud of these kids, some of them were extremely nervous. The growth with these kids that have put in the effort and put themselves out there just blows my mind,” said Miko.
Participants spoke on a wide range of subjects including Métis beading, Irish draught horses, snakes, and how to make grandma’s chocolate chip cookies.
Judge Raymond Cowell spoke on behalf of all the judges, and said how impressive it is for the kids to have the bravery to get up in front of a crowd and a panel of judges to speak.
“Keep doing things that are uncomfortable,” said Cowell, “Keep owning that skill, it’s going to really help you in the future.”
