Oilmen's Society turns Moose Lake into Family Day winter wonderland

The Bonnyville Oilmen’s Society hosted a free Family Day event at Vezeau Beach, turning Moose Lake into a winter wonderland with curling, a skating rink, ice fishing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and a bonfire.

BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Oilmen’s Society hosted a free Family Day event at Vezeau Beach, turning Moose Lake into a winter wonderland with curling, a skating rink, ice fishing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and a bonfire where people could enjoy hot chocolate and lunch.

The event took place on Feb. 16 and featured many door prizes including the chance to win an ice fishing tent.

The Bonnyville Oilmen’s Society Vice President Donovan Hilliar said the society puts on a Family Day event annually, and despite the bitter cold temperatures, families turned up to enjoy the activities, win prizes, and take a sleigh ride around the campgrounds.

“We reached out to a lot of local businesses and got donations for the event, so our sponsors have been a huge help in putting this together,” said Hilliar.

Hilliar said the event is run by volunteers from the Oilmen’s Society and this year they had help from the Beaver River Fish and Game Club who helped set up and coordinated the ice fishing.

“They usually do their own event, but this year they reached out and asked if we wanted to team up and do it together, and it’s been great,” said Hilliar.

Hilliar explained that the Bonnyville Oilmens Society volunteers their time and fundraises to give back to their community. The society is mainly comprised of those working in the oil and gas industry, and they have meetings monthly.
