ELK POINT – The $864 donations made by those attending Elk Point Community Choir’s Christmas Concert were welcomed by Elk Point Helping Hands, a group whose mission is to provide food and basic toiletries to families in need in the Elk Point area.
The group’s representative who accepted the donations told the concert audience that between Dec. 1, 2022 and Dec. 1, 2023, Helping Hands made 120 food deliveries to over 40 families, ranging from single person households, single parent households, couples, nuclear families and multiple generational families, from one to 10 people. Some needed help one or two times a year, some more often, she said
As a charity, Helping Hands achieved their three main goals – to be local, accepting local donations, shopping in Elk Point and providing local help, to be accountable, with their bank statements and transactions reviewed monthly, and to report to donors, she said.
Along with food and toiletries donations, the group distributed more than 55 quilts from Kalyna Country Quilters, winter coats and clothing from the Community Lions and individual donors, basic furniture and household items from the now-closed Granny Dawn’s store and from donors who responded to the group’s requests on social media, with recipients very appreciative of the help they received.
To all who have donated toward helping hands, the group emphasizes that “You are the real heroes of this project, we couldn’t do this without your support. You are all helping hands.”
