ELK POINT – It may have been a smaller deer harvest than many years, with only 13 of the estimated 75 entrants bringing in their whitetail racks to be measured, but for the marksmen with the two largest entries in the 18th Annual Elk Point Big Bucks competition, there were ‘big bucks’ indeed.
Justin Crawford, who along with Real Fontaine organized this year’s event, brought in the top trophy, measuring 194 3/8, and took home a $1,000 cheque from Mahikan Oil Corporation, while Mel Brooker, with antlers measuring 173 6/8, accepted the $500 second prize from Mahikan’s Craig Hutton.
However, there were plenty of other prizes available for both successful hunters and those whose bucks are still out there for next year’s harvest, with 18 sponsors providing a long lineup of items for the prize draws, with Crawford, who emceed the draws, thanking the donors for their “great sponsorship,” and noting, “We’re all here because we love horns.”
The first of those draws, for a large and handsome gun safe, went to Danielle Bouchard, and five lucky entrants received free entry to next year’s competition Shawn Tymchuk, Jon Kadutski, Tyson Pashulka, Aaron ‘Smuff’ Schaumleffel and Conrad Pierce.
A beef-on-a-bun supper wrapped up the event.
