ELK POINT  - On Nov. 15, a Town of Elk Point public notice reported, “The north end of town is experiencing water interruptions… Public Works is in the process of fixing the issues.”

Those issues proved much more complicated than originally estimated.

Just after 11 a.m. last Monday, residents in Elk Point’s northernmost residential districts received news of a temporary water shutdown, due to a water break and that 56, 57, 58, 59 and 60 Aves., Centennial Drive, 48 Ave. and the north Industrial Park would be without water until repairs were made.

“Most residents were back to full pressure after seven and a half hours, with the exception of the south apartment which had to wait until line fully replaced,” according to Manager of Operations Jay Duffee.

That building was constructed in the mid-1980s, and “The service supply for the apartment had to be replaced with new line, as the type of pipe that was installed, while being good in its time, was not municipally rated for the quality we use today and became compromised.”

Duffee said the repair, “took almost 11 hours to replace line from property line out to main in the street because of poor soil stability and having to use shoring to make it safe for workers to go into. The work was done by Nikiforuk Construction and assisted by Public Works.
