LAC LA BICHE – On March 14, members of Lac La Biche’s Muslim community were making food hampers and distributing them to people in need for their second annual food drive.
The event took place at the Al Kareem Mosque in Lac La Biche and is done as part of the month-long observance of Ramadan, which started on the evening of Feb. 28 this year and is anticipated to end on March 29.
Chandra Fyith is a leader with the Lac La Biche Muslim Youth Association. The group helped to organize this year’s food drive. Fyith said members started going around at the end of February collecting donations from all the Muslim businesses in the Lac La Biche area. Individuals were also welcome to contribute.
“We then ordered all our food based off of how much money we received,” Fyith said.
The food hampers were put together in the basement of the Al Kareem Mosque. Volunteers then delivered these hampers to people who stopped by the place of worship to pick them up.
Doing acts of charity, Fyith said, is one of the pillars of Islam.
“This is the perfect month to do that since we are fasting . . . and most people at this time of month like to give for charity.”
