Lac La Biche youth compete in 'Checkers Showdown'

The competition, which was organized through the Lac La Biche County FCSS Teen Chillzone program, took place on April 4 at the Bold Centre.

LAC LA BICHE – On April 4, a group of youth from the Lac La Biche area faced off against each other at the ‘Checkers’ Showdown’ tournament.

The event, which was organized through the Lac La Biche FCSS Teen Chillzone program, took place at the Bold Centre.

The ‘Checkers Showdown’ involved a double elimination knock out tournament, which meant players had to lose twice to get knocked out of the running.

Once teens were knocked out, there were still other games and activities for them to do.

At the end of the competition, the winner of the ‘Checkers Showdown’ received a trophy and was bestowed with the title of 2025 ‘Teen Chillzone Champion.’

Marcus Stevens was among those who took part in the ‘Checkers Showdown.’ He came in at second place in the tournament and participates in many of the activities that are held throughout the year as part of the Teen Chillzone program. He said game nights such as the ‘Checkers Showdown’ are good for youth to take part in.

“It helps us like advance further in life, gives us better mind skills, and better mindset . . . helps us do better, mostly,” said Stevens.

Tristan Germain was the overall winner of the 2025 'Checkers Showdown'.
