To start the new year,, Lac La Biche County Libraries isagain bringing enthusiasts of science fiction, fantasy and other fandoms together for an afternoon of excitement as part of Library Con. The returning event brings a taste of Comic Con to the community, and allows people to socialize with those of similar interests.

According to Cynthia Laboucane of Lac La Biche County Libraries, the ninth annual Library Con is set to take place on January 4. The event will be hosted at the Stuart MacPherson Public Library.

“This is a free, family-friendly event that promises to be a fun and imaginative day for all ages,” Laboucane told Lakeland This Week.

The theme for the upcoming Library Con, Laboucane explained, is ‘Myths and Legends’, and attendees are invited to come and immerse themselves – for a few hours at least – in a world of fantasy, folklore, and creativity. As with other years, Library Con 2025 will feature plenty of interesting things to do.

“The library staff has carefully designed each event to reflect the theme while also providing fun, hands-on experiences for attendees of all ages,” she stated.

Those who come for Library Con 2025 will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities designed for all ages. Laboucane said creative costumes are encouraged as there will be a costume contest with prizes awarded to the attendees who come dressed as their favourite mythical characters.

There will also be crafts, a scavenger hunt that will take participants on an adventure through the library, as well as colouring tables for those who those who are artistically-inclined.

“A coloring contest will offer a chance to showcase artistic talent, and a caricature artist will be on hand to create whimsical portraits of attendees,” she said.

Library Con, Laboucane went on, is planned to provide a unique opportunity for families to experience a condensed version of a Comic Con, and encourage creativity in a fun, welcoming environment. Library Con is planned in advance, and throughout the year, staff are busy promoting the event while preparing crafts and activities that will take place throughout the afternoon.

“As soon as one Library Con ends we begin brainstorming the theme for the next one,” she said. “Choosing the theme for Library Con is always a collaborative effort.”
