LAC LA BICHE – A 19-year-old Kikino man is facing a slew of charges including assault and attempting to disarm a police officer during an arrest at Heart Lake First Nation on Jan. 29.

Lac La Biche RCMP initially responded to a request shortly after 9 p.m. to “remove an individual from a residence.” However, upon arrival the RCMP determined that individual had been stabbed.

According to a police report, a suspect believe to be connected to the stabbing attempted to flee on foot but was stopped.

“During the arrest, the suspect became combative, punching, kicking and biting officers while trying to disarm them," the RCMP report alleges. "Despite the struggle, officers were able to place the suspect into custody with the assistance of a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). Multiple officers sustained injuries during this altercation and were treated on scene.”

Luke Cardinal has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault on police causing bodily harm, two counts of attempting to disarm a police officer, mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with court orders.

Cardinal was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody. His last court date was on Feb. 3 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Lac La Biche.
