ST. PAUL - The St. Paul Municipal Library is hoping to help those who are about to step out and live on their own for the first time, offering life skills and tips, while creating a smooth transition to the next stage in life.
According to Eunhye Cho of the St. Paul Municipal Library, the 'living on your own' program is being offered because the library has received a number of requests from community members over the last two years. So, when a practicum student offered to run the sessions for the community, staff took advantage of the opportunity.
The program was offered previously in 2017 and again in 2019 and was well received both times.
"Those who attended were happy with what they learned," says Cho, adding one of the parents who attended with their child said the program should be offered to everyone because even the parent reported learning something new.
The course is split into three online sessions.
The first session will focus on important living skills, such as how to be organized, the importance of having an organized home, budgeting, what to consider when preparing meals, and taking personal responsibility for basics such as laundry.
"The last two sessions will focus on mental and physical aspects of living alone such as stress management, (and the) importance of self-care," says Cho. "When people generally think about self-care, we just think about menu planning and exercise, but there is more to it."
The last session will cover mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life.
Anyone interested in taking the course can sign up through the St. Paul Municipal Library's website, by emailing [email protected] or calling 780-645-4904. The program is being offered through Zoom.
Sessions run on Nov. 18, Nov. 25 and Dec. 2 from 5 to 6 p.m.
