Second-degree murder charges laid in Kehewin homicide

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has now arrested and charged Tristyn Trey Badger, 22, with second degree murder in the death of a 54-year-old man from Kehewin Cree Nation. 

KEHEWIN – Following the death of a 54-year-old man from Kehewin Creen Nation earlier this month, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has now arrested and charged Tristyn Trey Badger, 22, with second degree murder. 

On the evening of March 9, police received a report that a shooting had occurred at a residence in Kehewin. 

When RCMP members arrived, they located a 54-year-old victim who was deceased.  

Officers from the Bonnyville RCMP detachment and Cold Lake RCMP Police Dog Service, then began to search for the suspect, while the Kehewin community was put on Emergency Alert and residents were asked to stay indoors and off the roads.

A confrontation between RCMP and the 22-year-old suspect, later identified as Badger, occurred outside a residence resulting in two officers discharging their service weapons.  

The 22-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital and then flown by STARS Air Ambulance to an Edmonton area hospital.

According to a recent RCMP release dated March 17, Badger was remanded in custody on March 12. His next court appearance is set for March 22 in Bonnyville Provincial Court.
