A gym class fight that reportedly spilled into the hallways at Lac La Biche’s Aurora Middle School resulted in local RCMP being called to assist.

School officials sent an update to parents late Friday afternoon, referencing “an incident” that occurred earlier in the day at the Grade 4-8 school.

“The situation began in the gym and then moved into the hallway,” explained the notice, emailed to all parents and guardians of Aurora students by school principal Carolina Franke. “While we did not activate a lockdown, students were asked to remain in their classrooms while staff addressed the matter.”

Lac La Biche RCMP were contacted as a precaution, noted Franke, but the situation resolved before their arrival.

School officials have not said how many students were directly involved in the initial altercation, but did say because it took place during the school day, a number of students were affected as the incident played out. Those students, continued Franke, were provided with any support they needed. The parents of students directly impacted by the incident were also individually contacted.

“We would like to commend all of our students for their behaviour during the incident. They followed instructions and cooperated with staff. As a result, we were able to act quickly to deal with the situation,” said Franke.

Parents and guardians of students in the school who feel their child could benefit from further support are encouraged to contact the school. The Northern Lights School Division website also has contact information for community resources.

There was no report of injuries, or details of any administrative discipline to students arising from the incident.
