A Lac La Biche County councillor has filed papers to run for the Liberal Party nomination in the Lac La Biche – St. Paul constituency.

John Nowak has put his name forward for the nomination.

“The Liberal policy to me is what the province needs,” Nowak told the Lac La Biche Post in an article printed Oct. 25. “Everybody knows I’ve always spoken my mind. There’s no guessing what I mean.”

The Liberal Party expects to have filled its nominations in urban centres by the end of the year, said operations manager Corina Ganton, after which the party will focus on finding nominees for the rural constituencies.

“We’re trying to get as ready, before that, as possible. We will be running a candidate in every riding,” said Gantan.

With the newly elected leader Raj Sherman, the party has been doing a lot of strategizing, she added. “We are quite optimistic about the next election.” The Liberals are anticipating a spring election.

At press time, no other candidates have filed the paperwork to run for the nomination in the local constituency.

The party expects to have selected its local candidate by mid-December, with the cutoff two weeks prior. The date for an election, if necessary, has not been called.

“Although Alison Redford has come in on change, it’s quite difficult to change a tree that’s been implanted for 40 years. You can’t shake that up too much and you can already see that she’s having trouble bringing forward a lot of the changes that she wanted to,” Gantan said.

Polls show people have more confidence in Sherman in the health care sector than with the government, she added.

If successful, Nowak would step down from County council as required by municipal bylaws.
