Two people died following a collision on Highway 28, near the Mallaig turnoff, while two others were airlifted by STARS Air Ambulance to Edmonton, during the afternoon of June 30.
St. Paul RCMP were called to the fatal collision at about 2 p.m. The incident involved three vehicles.
A 49-year-old male and a 52-year-old female, both from Edmonton, died as a result of the collision, according to a RCMP media release. A 12-year-old female riding in the same vehicle was airlifted by STARS.
The section of highway was closed for a number of hours while RCMP investigated the collision. It was determined that an eastbound SUV allegedly crossed the centre line and collided with a westbound travel trailer, according to RCMP. The SUV then collided with a westbound minivan that was following behind the trailer.
“The minivan then entered the north ditch where it came to a rest and immediately caught on fire. Quick acting motorists pulled a 12-year-old female from the burning vehicle,&” says the release.
The two remaining occupants from the minivan were unable to be removed as fire engulfed the vehicle, according to RCMP.
The driver of the SUV, a 27-year-old female from Drayton Valley, was also airlifted by STARS.
The four occupants in the truck hauling the travel trailer were unharmed.
“RCMP is not releasing the names of the victims at this time as the investigation is still on going,&” says the release.
