ST. PAUL - For some people, decorating for Christmas involves a few strands of lights, an inflatable character and a wreath hanging from their door. But for others, the planning, supplies, and enthusiasm is much greater.

The Newby family lives at 4418 45th Ave in St. Paul. According to Alison and Tyson, the family loves decorating their house for Christmas.

"For us, it's all about spreading joy and bringing happiness to others. Christmas has always been very important to our families and we have many family traditions, but our absolute favourite is driving around town looking at Christmas lights," says Alison.

This year, the Newby family felt it was particularly important to go all out and decorate their home.

"Many of us need a little more light in our lives."

Alison says decorating their home is a great way to spend time together as a family, and build special memories together.

"This year, our children really got into it and helped out quite a bit. They even helped make some of the decorations."

Every year, the Newby family invests about $200 into their decorations, slowly growing their collection, or replacing lights as needed. And they already have plans on which part of the yard they would like to add more decorations to next year.

So far, the Newby family has received a lot of positive feedback about their festive decorations, but one particular comment does stand out.

"Our favourite is from our neighbour Lorette who jokingly says that she doesn’t even need to turn on her kitchen lights because our Christmas lights are so bright."

I spy Christmas lights

The St. Paul Municipal Library is organizing a fun way for families to safely explore the community and enjoy decorations that have been put up throughout town.

The Christmas Light I Spy Bingo cards are available through the library, and families are sure to come across a variety of unique Christmas displays as they work to fill the cards. Traditional items such as a snowman or snowflake are included, alongside more unique items such as Santa in a Zamboni, a hippopotamus, or an alien.

The I Spy Bingo cards can be accessed through the St. Paul Municipal Library website. The cards can also be picked up curbside by contacting the library at (780) 645-4904.
