LAKELAND - Lakeland This Week was recognized by its industry association for excellence last week.
The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) held its 103rd annual general meeting in Edmonton Sept. 22, where it announced the winners of the 2022 Better Newspaper Competition.
Lakeland This Week won in seven categories, including second place for Best Front Page in its circulation category (5,000-9,999), third place for Best Overall newspaper, Best Editorial Page and Best Sports Page/Section.
Reporter Jazmin Tremblay won second place for Best Sports Writing for her article on Laurier Sylvestre dropping the puck at the Senior Pontiacs’ 70th anniversary game from Dec. 13, 2022, while editor Janice Huser won an honourable mention in the Education Writing Award for her piece “St. Paul Education commits $10,000 to address racism,” which ran on Jan. 18, 2022.
The paper also won second place in the Best Agricultural Section category for the 2022 Breeder’s Directory.
“We’re very pleased and proud to be honoured by our peers in the community news media industry,” said Clare Gauvreau, publisher of Lakeland This Week. “The General Excellence awards look at the whole newspaper, from front to back, from two randomly-selected weeks each year. Winning here is a total team effort, and the only way you can prepare for it is to do the best you can each and every edition."
She added, “Thanks to Janice, Jazmin and all our talented team for all their hard work, and to our readers and advertisers for your support. It takes great communities to make great community media.”
Great West Media, the parent company of Lakeland This Week, took home a total of 52 awards between nine of its papers for general excellence, writing, advertising and photography.
