GLENDON – The Glendon School girls’ basketball team took the 1A Northeast zone championship during a tournament held in Glendon on March 14 and the team will now head to Olds for provincials.
Glendon School Athletic Director Daryn Galatiuk says the provincial championship will be taking place this week, and he has confidence in the team that has shown both skill and dedication.
At provincials, the Glendon School team will be up against 1A teams from across Alberta.
Galatiuk had high praise for the athletes on the team who worked hard for their success.
“The team has a good strong core group of Grade 12 girls that are good leaders. They work extremely hard in practice, and they’re dedicated to playing basketball.”
Galatiuk said he has high hopes for them getting into some semi-final rounds this year.
“This team made it to provincials last year as well, so this is their second year in a row making it. They are a very good team. We’ve got some height, some speed, and some skill, and they are going into provincials ranked fifth out of 12.”
Galatiuk spoke about the guidance of head coach Sandra Lysy and assistant coach Brittany Webber being a key factor in the team's success, saying, “they really have hardworking coaches.”
In his role as athletic director, Galatiuk spoke about how hungry the youth of Glendon are for sports programs.
“Kids love it, and they go hard. It keeps me on my toes. It’s easy to find success when the kids are great, and they buy into it.”
