Program for homeschoolers focuses on teamwork, life skills, and fun

The 'Active Kids for Homeschoolers' program runs through the school year and takes place in fall and winter sessions.

LAC LA BICHE - Learning how to socialize with other children while developing important life skills and having fun is crucial for all kids, including those who receive their education at home.

For the past several years, Lac La Biche County’s Bold Centre has run the ‘Active Kids for Homeschoolers’ program.

The program is an opportunity for homeschoolers to get active and have fun with activities, sports, and team challenges, says Hannah Williams, a recreation programmer with Lac La Biche County.

“This program is specifically designed to provide children with a fun, active environment where they can engage in sports, games, and fitness activities while developing skills like teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical literacy,” she says.

According to Williams, the objective of the program, which runs throughout the school year and takes place in fall and winter sessions, is to promote physical activity, build sport skills, as well as foster positive competitive behaviour in a team-oriented environment.

Active Kids for Homeschoolers is also designed to help children develop physical literacy, which includes basic movement skills such as running, jumping, and balancing, she says.

“The Active Kids for Homeschoolers program is packed with a variety of exciting and dynamic activities,” says Williams.

Participants play sports such as soccer and basketball, go skating, curling, or swimming and take part in other activities such as archery. Games and challenges that promote teamwork and co-operation are also part of the curriculum, as are skill-building exercises that focus on coordination, agility, and balance.

Kids also participate in non-competitive games that are designed to teach positive sportsmanship.

“The program is designed to ensure that every child is engaged, learning new skills, and having a great time while staying active,” she says.
