ASIRT investigates death of man while in police custody in St. Paul

An investigation is underway after a man died while in police custody in St. Paul in March.

ST. PAUL - An investigation is underway after a man died while in police custody in St. Paul.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) reports that during the evening of March 18, St. Paul RCMP responded to a call "of an unwanted individual and found an intoxicated man."

The man was arrested and placed in cells at about 9:30 p.m.

"At 10:25 a.m. the next morning, the man was found unresponsive in his cell. Life-saving measures were attempted by police and emergency medical services, but he was declared deceased a short time later," reads information from ASIRT.

ASIRT’s investigation will examine the custody and care of the man. No additional information will be released, according to ASIRT.

"ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct."
